A desk looks messy mostly because of cables and things with no home. You can fix both with a few cheap changes, and you do not need to rewire anything. Work through these in order.
1. Pull everything off and decide what stays
Clear the desk once. Anything you did not use this week goes in a drawer. What is left is what the desk needs to manage: usually a laptop or monitor, a keyboard and mouse, a lamp and a phone.
2. Reduce the number of cables
The best cable is the one you do not need. Replace what you can with wireless: a wireless keyboard and mouse removes two cords, and a charging stand lets a phone, watch and earbuds share one cable.
3. Gather the cords you keep
Bundle cords that run together into one sleeve so they look like one line instead of five. A split sleeve lets you add or remove a cable later without taking it all apart.
4. Give power one home
A single surge-protected strip, mounted under the desk or on the floor behind it, means one cable to the wall instead of a tangle of adapters. Pick one with enough outlets for what you actually own, and do not plug one strip into another. Surge protectors also wear out over time, so check the manufacturer's guidance on when to replace one.
5. Protect and organize the surface
A desk pad defines the work area and keeps a keyboard and mouse from scratching the desk.
Headphones are a common source of clutter. A stand gives them a place to live that is not the middle of the desk.
Safety notes
- Do not bundle cables so tightly that they bend sharply at the plug.
- Plug high-power appliances such as heaters directly into the wall, not into a strip.
- Keep power strips uncovered so they do not trap heat.
